In urban environments, where the demand for energy is high and resources are often stretched, innovative solutions like wastewater heat recovery are gaining attention for their potential to enhance energy efficiency. One of the most overlooked and undervalued assets many cities already have, is their wastewater network(s). Explore the concept of wastewater heat recovery, its benefits and its implications for sustainable urban development.
Wastewater heat recovery involves capturing thermal energy from wastewater (showers, sinks, or industrial processes) before it is discharged back into the environment. This recovered energy can then be repurposed for various applications, such as space heating and cooling, water heating, or industrial processes. Typically, up to 35% of total housing energy and up to 40% of the commercial & industrial energy is used to make hot water – water which is used once and then discarded into a city's sewers. An urban wastewater network collects of all this warm water and brings these thousands of flows together in the existing system of pipes. This heat energy is nicely contained, well distributed and is ready and waiting to be recovered and recycled.
While wastewater heat recovery presents clear advantages, several challenges must also be addressed:
As cities continue to prioritize sustainability and energy efficiency, wastewater heat recovery is poised to play a vital role in urban infrastructure. Advancements in technology, coupled with favorable policies and investments, will drive further adoption and innovation in this space. Wastewater heat recovery represents a compelling opportunity to maximize energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact in urban areas. By harnessing this untapped energy source, cities can move closer to their goals of sustainability and resilience in an increasingly resource-constrained world.
Do you want to do more to help the world utilize clean energy, but don't know where to begin?
STEN is here to help you get started. There is enough heat capacity available to power highly efficient electric heat pump systems to heat and cool many large buildings. Allowing them to quickly transition from fossil fuels and make a real meaningful decarbonization difference very quickly. So don't wait another moment - the time is now. Take the leap and unlock the potential.
