STEN OBJECTIVES & FOCUS

OBJECTIVE of STEN

Sewer Thermal Energy Network's objective is to promote the use of sewage thermal energy for the benefit of our collective lives and the environment by making development more sustainable. STEN is a network of the scientific and engineering community, the municipal utility community and the governance community with membership for all.

FOCUS of STEN

Energy Recycling:

Sewage Thermal Energy Use (STEU) is a form of energy recycling. That is, heat put into water which is later discharged as waste, can be removed and reused for heating. This is a sustainable activity, reducing the amount of primary energy expenditure and therefore reduces greenhouse gas emissions while achieving the heating and cooling needed with the built environment.

Mapping:

Provide mapping services, whereby STEN provides a map of the available heat within a city. This information will help bridge the information gap between a little known but vast resource and the development community.

  • There are entities that know about the heating and cooling capacity of sewage.
  • There are entities that develop the built environment.
  • There are entities that understand the implication and usefulness of heat pump technology and its advantageous coefficient of performance (COP) and its necessity in electrification of our systems.

One of the main objectives of STEN is to provide an interactive capacity between entities that allows for the development of this useful resource.

Grant Writing:

STEN has experience with research organizations, non-profit groups and governmental agencies and has successfully obtained funding.

Advocacy:

STEN will advocate for the adoption of sewage thermal energy use. STEN has government experience useful for policy advice, for legislative or codes. STEN is willing to meet with community groups, civic leaders and politicians.

Peer to Peer Networking:

The idea of energy recycling is a new, dynamic idea that will require rethinking by all participants in society. Not only does a bridge between groups need to be built, a community needs to develop within that space to change the world. STEN hopes to provide a place for all members of this coalition to meet and exchange information:  Engineers, Educators, Researchers, Developers, Policy Makers, Regulators. Become a Member of STEN

Education:

STEN hopes to meet with others to provide basic information and specifically focused information. It intends to promote these ideas through individual meetings, training and conferences.

Technical Assistance:

STEN is capable of providing energy planning support to municipal and utility sectors, feasibility analysis, modeling assistance and generalized technical support.

Technology Transfer:

STEN is connected to the manufacturers of equipment that define this space and are willing to discuss the pros and cons of such technology.

Academics & Research:

STEN promotes the science and research associated with STEU. Promoting and encouraging the writing of peer reviewed scientific articles and promoting the research associated with academic endeavors.
