The Sewer Thermal Energy Network Announces Toledo Water Reclamation Department as Newest Member

The Sewer Thermal Energy Network (STEN) is proud to announce that the Toledo Water Reclamation Department has joined its growing coalition of cities, municipalities, and utilities committed to advancing sustainable heating and cooling solutions through the recovery of thermal energy from sewage systems. This partnership highlights Toledo’s leadership in exploring innovative practices that reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance climate resilience.

ABOUT TOLEDO WATER RECLAMATION DEPARTMENT:

The Toledo Water Reclamation Department is dedicated to protecting public health and the environment through efficient wastewater treatment. The department operates the Bay View Wastewater Treatment Plant and manages over 1,000 miles of sewer and drainage infrastructure serving the Toledo community. 


Currently undergoing a $900 million modernization effort, Toledo’s wastewater facilities provide a robust platform for exploring innovative energy solutions like sewer thermal energy recovery. Ongoing modernization efforts aim to enhance the plant’s capacity and protect local waterways, including the Maumee River and Lake Erie.


By joining STEN, Toledo strengthens its commitment to environmental stewardship and urban sustainability. The partnership will focus on sharing best practices and exploring scalable applications of sewer thermal energy for municipal and district heating and cooling systems, creating opportunities to reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
