Sewage Thermal Energy Use (STEU) is the next, necessary step for development and urban infrastructure. It adheres to the United Nations’ Brundtland Report which calls for sustainable development. Paul has a PhD in STEU from Drexel University; specifically, the Department of Civil Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE). Paul has more than a decade of classroom experience following his passion for teaching young engineers the fundamentals of environmental engineering. 

Paul has 30 years of Water/Wastewater Utility experience. He was pleased to be able to develop a biogas co-gen facility using a novel funding mechanism. This sustainable project uses biogas to produce both heat and electricity (5.36 MW), minimizing energy purchases, efficiently reclaim a waste product, monetizing the benefits all while reducing pollution. Paul installed the first sewage heat utilization unit in the US to demonstrate proof of concept. 

Paul’s penchant for practical research can be found in his work for several non-profit research foundations. Paul had the honor of being a Co-Principal Investigator for several, large, multinational research projects; most recently with The Water Research Foundation in its report on STEU (2019). Prior to that he led research into Mn control in drinking water as well as participation in other energy and recovery related projects. 

Paul appreciates the importance of networking and is involved in many organizations. Mostly in the water/wastewater sector but also in the alternative energy sector as well. Addressing our collective need to reduce our carbon emissions is a group project with many elements and requires cooperation. Paul is proud to be a member of STEN.
