NICK MEETEN,

Director of Innovation & Global Strategy

Nick Meeten is a director of Applied Energy Ltd in New Zealand, working in the areas of Buildings/Water/Sustainability. He is a Chartered Member of Engineering New Zealand. His career has seen him living and working in New Zealand and overseas in UK, Spain, Holland, Italy and Germany.

Nick is a mechanical engineer with more than 30 years’ experience in the following:

  • Energy planning and mapping
  • Building services design
  • Wastewater services within urban areas
  • Sustainability – Cities of the future, green building design, sustainable water use

He regularly speaks at international conferences (over 20 conferences in 14 countries to date). Nick has been invited to contribute to reports for the International Energy Agency, UK Govt, United Nations Environment Programme and Water Environment Federation in the USA. He has published papers on the subject of energy recovery from wastewater and one of his design projects of a low energy retail mall comfort cooling system was the recipient of the New Zealand Energy Conservation Authority Award for Innovation. Nick is an invited ‘Expert’ on the US based portal energycentral.com

Nick’s specialty, an area in which he has built an international reputation, is using the thermal energy capacity of wastewater. “In an era of changing climates, Cities all over the world are increasingly struggling to cope with heating and cooling energy demands from buildings and industries whilst at the same time reducing energy consumptions. Wastewater flows are a huge thermal resource which is almost completely ignored yet they have been proven to allow buildings to transition away from using fossil fuels and allow wastewater source heatpumps to provide heating and cooling whilst operating up to twice as efficiently as air source heatpumps, as well as generating less noise and requiring less physical space. Using this thermal resource, and the below ground infrastructure which is already there makes really good economic and environmental sense.”

Applied Energy is a consulting firm specialising in using wastewater as a thermal source and undertaking thermal energy mapping of wastewater networks for entire cities, so these maps can be used as a planning tool.
